The band’s original compositions combine moments of strict notation and free improvisation. They draw on the aesthetics of modern jazz, contemporary classical, driving rock, and hip hop. Instrumentation includes Trombone, Bass, Cello, Pipa, Vibraphone, and Drums (all amplified and effected with foot pedals and computers).  Besides original works, they perform their own very different covers of songs by Radiohead, Flaming Lips, and Pink Floyd.

Here’s what the press says:

From the A.V. Club…

A rotating cast of musicians, including Ben Willis of The Weather Duo and Corey Murphy of Pushmi-Pullyu, wrap original compositions and covers of Radiohead and Flaming Lips songs in electric cello, double bass, vibraphone, pipa, guitar, and drums to mesmerizing effect. Chuck in the warped effects on each instrument and the live visuals projected behind the performance, and the result is a slack-jawed audience.

From the High Noon Saloon…

Lovely Socialite performs a strict notation at times grooving to free improvisation. Fans of Modern Jazz, Contemporary Classical Music, Rock & Hip-Hop will become captivated by the amazing sound of Lovely Socialite Mrs. Thomas W. Phipps.

From NetMusic Life…

[Lovely Socialite] is a band that casually brings together several influences, from jazz-rock rhythms with hip-hop attitude and very free improvisations. The single, “Brachiosaurus Boogie”, caught me from the first listening…an intro bass line mixed with dirt and carnal vocals and handclaps.

Most of the members of Lovely Socialite met while studying music at the UW Madison. Now the members are involved in a wide variety of musical endeavors, including orchestras, jazz ensembles, and education. Other groups the members are involved in include notable Madison ensembles the Weather Duo, Pushmi-Pullyu, and the Brothers Grimm.

We would love to hear from any venues that are interested in having us play.

For more information, contact Corey Murphy (corey@mamrecords.com) or at (414)507-3859.

Thanks!  We look forward to hearing from you.
